COAST GUARD TO DEDICATE PARK TO LATE ADMIRAL | |

MOBILE, Ala. - The Coast Guard Aviation Training Center here is scheduled to host a dedication ceremony, Friday, at 11a.m., to open its newest park in the memory of Rear Adm. William H. Stewart. During his Coast Guard career, Rear Adm. Stewart worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life of his sailors and their families. He was Commander of the Eighth Coast Guard District in New Orleans from 1981 until his retirement in 1985. After retiring, Rear Adm. Stewart continued to serve the Gulf Coast Region through volunteer work. Most notable among the many civic leadership positions he held include: President of the Mobile Council for the Navy League of the United States, Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce and Division Chairman of United Way.At the time of his death last November, Rear Adm. Stewart was the Senior Coast Guard Retiree in Alabama. Coast Guard ATC Mobile chose to name the park after Stewart to honor his legacy. The park, set on a small pond, features several picnic benches for Coast Guard members and their families to enjoy a peaceful park setting. Capt. Dave Callahan, commanding officer of ATC Mobile and Rear Adm. Stewart's wife, Paulette, will deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony.
