Coast Guard suspends search for missing surfer

MOBILE, Ala. – The Coast Guard suspended its search at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2009, for John Stevens, a 17-year-old man who was reported missing in the vicinity of Navarre Beach Pier in Pensacola, Fla., Friday, April 25, 2009.

Coast Guard crews conducted a 16-hour search covering 48 square miles.

Coast Guard Station Pensacola received a report at approximately 9:35 p.m., Saturday, April 25, 2009, from Santa Rosa County reporting that Stevens went missing while surfing with his grandfather.

Coast Guard crews involved in the search to assist Santa Rosa County included an HH-65C Dolphin resuce helicopter and crew from Air Station New Orleans, the Coast Guard Cutter Cobia and crew from Sector Mobile, a Station Pensacola small boat and crew and a Station Destin small boat and crew.
